Kobe Croquette was launched by Rock Field in 1989, with its first shop opening in Kobe’s Motomachi district in April of that year. The present building was completed in 2010 and designed by Tadao Ando.

Occupying a site of only about seven tsubo, the shop stands within the dense commercial streetscape of Nankinmachi. Unlike the exposed concrete strongly associated with many of Ando’s works, its exterior is characterized by slender metal members and perforated metal panels.

A Small Ando Building in Nankinmachi

Kobe Croquette Motomachi stands in Nankinmachi, Kobe’s historic Chinatown.

The Kobe Croquette brand was launched in 1989, with its first shop opening in Kobe’s Motomachi district in April of that year. The present building was completed in 2010 and designed by Tadao Ando.

Occupying a site of only about seven tsubo, it is an exceptionally small building. It is sometimes introduced locally as the “smallest Tadao Ando building in Japan,” although that description is best understood as a popular characterization rather than a definitive ranking.

Exterior of Kobe Croquette Motomachi viewed from the street in Nankinmachi, with vertical banners

Restaurants, signs, merchandise and pedestrians fill the surrounding streets. Rather than standing apart as an isolated architectural object, the shop is embedded directly in the dense streetscape of Nankinmachi.

A Facade Made of Metal

What first stands out is not the exposed concrete commonly associated with Ando’s architecture.

Slender metal members and perforated panels cover the exterior, with vertical Kobe Croquette banners suspended across the front.

At street level, the sales counter opens directly toward the pedestrian route. In contrast to the metal surface above, the storefront connects closely with the activity of Nankinmachi.

Within such a limited footprint, there is little attempt to make the building appear larger than it is. Frames, panels, openings and signage are instead concentrated within the narrow frontage.

Reading the Building from the Side

From the front, merchandise and banners compete strongly for attention, allowing the architecture itself to blend into the surrounding commercial scene.

Moving around the building reveals its construction more clearly.

Closely spaced vertical members stand in front of perforated metal panels, and the same exterior treatment continues along the narrow side of the building.

On the opposite side, a diagonal member crosses the panelled surface beside a small opening.

Away from the storefront, the arrangement of the metal components becomes a more visible part of the building’s character.

Rock Field and Tadao Ando

The relationship between Rock Field and Tadao Ando extends well beyond this small shop.

Rock Field’s official history records the company opening a shop in Rose Garden, a commercial building designed by Ando in Kobe’s Kitano district, in the 1970s. Ando Tadao Architect & Associates also handled the architectural design and supervision of Rock Field’s Shizuoka Factory, showing how their relationship continued through several projects.

Perforated metal side wall of Kobe Croquette Motomachi facing a narrow street in Nankinmachi

The conditions of a large production facility and a seven-tsubo shop in Nankinmachi could hardly be more different.

Kobe Croquette Motomachi represents that long relationship at an unusually small scale.

Seven Tsubo Facing the Street

There is no expansive interior or extended architectural approach here.

The distance between shop and street is minimal, and during opening hours the sales counter becomes part of the pedestrian scene.

Customers, staff, menus and banners overlap with the architecture, making the facade inseparable from the everyday activity of Nankinmachi.

Seen within the dense surrounding streetscape, both the building’s small scale and the character of its metal exterior become particularly clear.

Rather than relying on the spatial scale associated with many of Ando’s larger works, Kobe Croquette Motomachi establishes its presence through the assembly of metal components along a narrow street frontage.

My Impression

Although this is a very small shop in Nankinmachi, the building that first came to mind when I saw it was SPS, another Rock Field project.

Rather than exposed concrete, its exterior is defined by metal panels and framing, which reminded me of SPC. Ando is strongly associated with concrete, so I find it interesting to compare these more metal-driven works as another side of his architecture.

Seen in the context of the long relationship between Rock Field and Tadao Ando, this small building proved to be a particularly interesting work to encounter.
