Sakura Hiroba in Toyonaka, Osaka, is a park designed by Tadao Ando as part of Panasonic Group’s initiative to make company-owned land available for environmental and community benefit. Opened in April 2009, it occupies a 10,000-square-meter site planted with 130 Somei Yoshino cherry trees. Its defining arrangement is a broad central lawn surrounded by rows of cherry trees and pedestrian paths. Although privately owned, the park is open to the public and also serves as a temporary evacuation space in emergencies.

Sakura Hiroba is part of a series of four parks established in Makuhari, Kadoma, Chigasaki, and Toyonaka. In his message about the project, Ando emphasizes the relationship between cherry blossoms, seasonal change, and environmental awareness. Rather than placing a conventional building on the site, the project transforms corporate land into a place where people can experience the changing seasons.

The Toyonaka site lies within walking distance of Shonai Station on the Hankyu Takarazuka Line. The photographs show concrete perimeter walls facing the surrounding streets, metal gates, entrance stairs and ramps, and circular planting beds. The central lawn remains open, while the surrounding paths are organized by repeated rows of cherry trees. Photographs taken in May 2018 and August 2019 reveal the spatial structure of the park even outside the flowering season.

Greenery Beyond the Street

Sakura Hiroba stands beside residential streets and neighboring buildings. Seen from outside, leafy branches appear first, with the broad lawn extending beyond them. Rather than occupying the site with a large building, the project reserves a substantial open area within the urban fabric.

Yet the site’s boundary is clearly defined. An exposed-concrete wall follows the street, and a nameplate identifies the entrance. Formwork joints and circular tie marks remain visible on the concrete surface. The straight lines of the wall contrast with the irregular outlines of the trees.

The combination of concrete walls and metal gates indicates that this publicly accessible space is also a managed property. Trees rise beyond the boundary, while stairs become visible near the entrance. Concrete provides a clear transition between the street and the planted grounds.

An Open Lawn at the Center

A broad, uninterrupted lawn occupies the center of the park. Instead of dividing this open area into smaller planted sections, the trees are arranged primarily around its edges. From a slightly elevated viewpoint, the relationship between the lawn and the paths surrounding it becomes particularly clear.

From the center, the cherry trees form a continuous planted border. From the perimeter paths, their trunks stand at repeated intervals, with the open lawn visible beyond. The experience changes depending on whether one looks outward from the grass or inward from the surrounding walkway.

In the photographs taken in May 2018, the blossoms have already given way to green leaves. The lawn and tree canopies create a landscape quite different from the spring flowering season. Although the park is dedicated to cherry trees, its arrangement of grass and planting continues to define the space throughout the year.

Walking Between the Cherry Trees

The photographs taken in August 2019 document the circulation paths in greater detail. A broad paved walkway runs alongside the central lawn, lined with cherry trees. Each tree rises from a circular planting bed, clearly separating the soil from the paved surface.

Wide walkway lined with trees in circular planting beds

Viewed along the axis of the path, the repeated trunks and circular beds establish a strong sense of depth. The park is not simply a place to observe individual trees; it is also a place to experience their arrangement while walking. During the flowering season, overlapping branches would transform the scene, but even in summer, the rhythm of trunks and the direction of the path remain legible.

Perspective along a walkway with trees in circular beds on both sides
Straight tree-lined paved path running beside the lawn

The open lawn extends along one side of the path, while planting and perimeter structures occupy the other. As visitors move, views alternate between the expansive grass and the more enclosed tree-lined walkway. This sequence can be understood in architectural terms, although it is formed here not by corridors and columns, but by paving and repeated trees.

Steps, Ramps, and Concrete Details

Cherry trees and grass dominate the overall impression, but the entrance reveals a more explicitly architectural composition. Stairs rise between low concrete walls and handrails, leading toward a small information shelter.

A ramp is arranged beside the stairs, providing an alternative route across the change in level. The photographs show how low walls, railings, and planting shape a narrow passage. Circulation is therefore organized through more than one route.

Yellow handrail beside the stairs, concrete parapet wall, and posted notices

These entrance elements are less conspicuous than the central lawn, yet they are essential to the transition from street to park. Visitors pass through boundaries and changes in level before reaching the open grounds. The perimeter wall, entrance steps, planted paths, and lawn become successive parts of a single experience.

A Different Sakura Hiroba from Kadoma

Among the Sakura Hiroba projects designed by Tadao Ando, the Kadoma park opened in April 2006. It covers approximately 16,200 square meters and contains 190 cherry trees, incorporating water and a more three-dimensional landscape. Toyonaka, by comparison, occupies 10,000 square meters and has 130 trees arranged around a broad central lawn.

The difference goes beyond site area and tree count. At Kadoma, changes in level and reflections on water contribute to the experience. At Toyonaka, the principal relationship is between an open grassy center and the trees surrounding it. The same architect and corporate initiative produced distinct landscapes suited to their respective sites.

Toyonaka’s Sakura Hiroba is meaningful beyond the cherry blossom season. Summer foliage provides shade, autumn brings changing colors, and winter reveals the branching structures of the trees. Ando’s message for the Sakura Hiroba project likewise emphasizes an awareness of nature and seasonal change.

The park is also notable for allowing the public to visit land owned by a private company without an admission fee. In this respect, the architect’s work becomes part of the everyday surroundings of local residents, rather than a place reserved for the users of a particular institution.

My Impression

Compared with Sakura Hiroba in Kadoma, which I had visited earlier, the Toyonaka site felt somewhat smaller. Given that Kadoma is home to Panasonic’s headquarters, the difference in scale was particularly noticeable to me.

I actually visited Sakura Hiroba in Toyonaka twice. On my first visit in 2018, I arrived only to find it closed. Having come all that way, I couldn’t bring myself to leave without taking any photographs. Instead, I walked around the perimeter, photographing whatever I could see through the fences and gates. Looking back, I was probably a little too persistent with my camera (laughs).

I returned in 2019 and was finally able to walk around the grounds.

Even so, I appreciate being able to visit a square designed by Tadao Ando without special arrangements. Unlike a museum or private residence, it is a place where people can encounter his design in everyday life during opening hours.

I would certainly like to return when the cherry trees are in full bloom. I imagine the landscape would look quite different from the green scenery I saw during my visits.
