A Monumental Concrete Ship That Changes as You Walk Around It
In Kasugai, Aichi Prefecture, a massive concrete structure suddenly appears within the ordinary urban landscape.
This is the Daikoku Denki Headquarters Building, commonly known as “BIG SHIP,” designed by Tadao Ando.
It is neither a museum nor a church nor a residence, but a building created for a private company.
Yet walking around it reveals an architecture that cannot easily be understood simply as an office building.
A long curving wall, a monumental tower rising beyond it, deep overhangs, vegetation layered against concrete—the form of the building seems to change depending on where you stand.
It was a fascinating architecture that gradually revealed itself through movement.

A Massive Concrete Form Suddenly Appears in the City
BIG SHIP
My first impression of BIG SHIP was its sheer scale.
Houses and commercial buildings surround the site, and the busy National Route 19 runs nearby.
Within this everyday urban environment, an enormous concrete wall with almost no decoration suddenly appears.
The entire building cannot be understood at once.
First there is a wall. Walk a little farther and a curve emerges.
Beyond that, another concrete volume rises vertically into the sky.
This is not an architecture that can be understood simply by standing in front of its façade.
From the beginning, it seems to ask you to walk around it.

Moving to the opposite side of the road changes the impression again.
From a distance, BIG SHIP no longer appears as a single enormous wall, but as a composition of several different volumes.
A low horizontal mass stretches across the site while a vertical element rises behind it.
The contrast between horizontal and vertical gives the entire complex a distinctive sense of tension.

A Great Curve Appears Among the Straight Lines
One of the most memorable elements of this architecture is the long curving concrete wall.
Tadao Ando’s architecture often brings to mind precise geometries, straight lines, and clearly defined rectangular forms.
At BIG SHIP, however, the wall itself bends gently across the site. Seen from across the road, this curve defines the silhouette of the building and can almost suggest the side of a gigantic ship.

As I moved closer, the curved wall became even more monumental.
An almost windowless expanse of exposed concrete continues for a considerable distance, while vegetation runs along its base.
Hard, heavy concrete and soft plant life exist side by side.
The contrast emphasizes the scale of the wall while at the same time creating a buffer between the enormous architecture and the surrounding street.

Walking Between Concrete and Greenery
BIG SHIP
Walking around BIG SHIP, I gradually became aware of how important the landscaping is to the experience of the building.
Low hedges extend along the concrete walls, with trees appearing at intervals.
Rather than exposing the massive architecture directly to the street, this layer of vegetation creates a certain distance between the human body and the enormous concrete surfaces, almost mediating between the two scales.

BIG SHIP
Seen diagonally, the curved wall takes on a completely different character from when it is viewed straight on.
Its edge gradually recedes into the distance and disappears behind the planting.
BIG SHIP is perhaps less an architecture designed to present a single powerful façade than one in which concrete surfaces seem to expand and contract according to the position of the person walking around them.
A “MAST” Rising Beyond the Wall
Another striking presence at BIG SHIP is the parking tower standing across the road. In contrast to the low, horizontally spreading headquarters building, this structure rises vertically toward the sky.
The two volumes establish a dramatic relationship across the street: one stretches outward along the ground, while the other reaches upward.

Viewed on its own from a short distance, the tower almost loses any obvious indication of its function.
A tall, narrow concrete volume with very few openings rises into the blue sky.
Rather than an auxiliary structure for an office complex, it begins to resemble a monumental piece of sculpture.
The horizontal BIG SHIP and this vertical tower face one another across the road, creating an architectural composition that extends beyond the boundaries of a single site and into the surrounding city.

Approaching the Enormous Concrete Canopy
BIG SHIP
Returning toward the main building, a massive projecting concrete canopy begins to dominate the view.
From a distance, it had appeared simply as a horizontal line. As I approached, that line transformed into an enormous ceiling overhead.
There are moments in Ando’s architecture when abstract geometry seen from afar becomes a physical experience as the body moves closer.
At BIG SHIP, that transformation is particularly clear.

Stepping beneath the canopy makes the weight of the concrete above immediately apparent.
Yet deeper inside, glazed openings begin to appear, revealing a different character from the closed exterior walls.
What initially looked like a single massive block of concrete gradually breaks apart into walls, columns, canopies, glass, and passages as you move closer.

Looking Up Reveals the True Weight of the Concrete
Standing close to the building, the eye naturally turns upward.
Only from here does the true thickness of the concrete become apparent. A vast horizontal plane projects overhead, vertical walls rise beyond it, and fragments of blue sky are cut out between them.
At this scale, the experience feels less like standing beside an office building and more like entering a monumental abstract sculpture.

BIG SHIP
What struck me particularly was the way the concrete itself frames the sky.
There is almost no decoration. Yet the height of the walls, the thickness of the canopy, the changing light, and the boundary between concrete and blue sky create a remarkably powerful scene.
While walking through Ando’s architecture, there are moments when I feel that I am no longer looking at the building itself, but at the sky as it has been framed by architecture.
I felt that sensation here at BIG SHIP as well.
Walking Around the Building and Seeing It Again
After walking around the building and stepping back once more, BIG SHIP looked different from when I had first arrived.
What initially appeared to be a single enormous mass of concrete could now be understood as a collection of different elements: the curved wall, vegetation, canopy, openings, and the vertical tower.

Roads, cars, nearby shops, and houses surround the site.
What makes BIG SHIP particularly interesting is that such a powerful piece of concrete architecture exists within this completely ordinary urban environment.
This is not a museum or a church that people visit specifically to experience architecture.
People work here every day, cars enter and leave, and countless others simply pass by.
Yet within that everyday setting stands an architecture with an extraordinary physical presence.

9.「BIG SHIP」
Thinking About the Name “BIG SHIP”
After completing the walk around the building, the name “BIG SHIP” began to make more sense to me.
The architecture does not literally imitate a ship.
Yet when the long curving wall is viewed from the side, and the tall vertical tower rises beyond it, the forms can evoke the relationship between a ship’s hull and a mast.
At least for me, the image contained in the name did not appear immediately.
It gradually emerged only after walking around the architecture and seeing it from different positions.
Another Side of Tadao Ando Revealed Through Corporate Architecture
BIG SHIP
Many of the Tadao Ando buildings I have visited have been museums, cultural institutions, temples, churches, and residences, each with a clearly recognizable purpose.
BIG SHIP also has a specific function as a corporate facility, yet its exterior makes almost no attempt to express the conventional image of an office building.
Instead, concrete walls, curves, towers, and canopies create a powerful architectural landscape.
It is a practical building for a company, but at the same time it has become a landmark within the city.
In that dual character, I found another side of Tadao Ando’s architecture—one quite different from his museums or religious spaces.
My Impression
BIG SHIP
BIG SHIP might not have remained so strongly in my memory if I had seen it only in a single photograph.
From the front, there is the enormous curving wall. Moving to the side reveals vegetation layered against concrete.
Approaching the building brings the huge canopy overhead.
Stepping farther away reveals the monumental tower rising toward the sky.
It is the same architecture, yet every few steps seem to reveal a different form.
Even without entering the building, simply walking around its exterior provides a surprisingly rich architectural experience.
BIG SHIP reminded me once again that the pleasure of exploring Tadao Ando’s architecture is not limited to famous museums and churches.
