hhstyle.com/casa is a commercial building designed by Tadao Ando on Cat Street in Harajuku. Opened in 2005 by inter office, it originally housed high-end furniture and interior brands including ARMANI/CASA and Boffi.
What distinguishes the building is its folded steel shell. Rather than relying on exposed concrete as the primary architectural expression, Ando created an irregular volume from ribbed steel plates. According to the structural engineer, 12 mm plates were used for the roof and 16 mm plates for the walls, with approximately one hundred separate pieces welded together on site.
A Dark Object on Cat Street
Along the dense retail environment of Harajuku’s Cat Street, the building appears as an unusually closed and dark object.

Rather than displaying merchandise through a conventional storefront, large folded metal surfaces dominate the street elevation.

Only a narrow horizontal opening interrupts the side wall, reinforcing the impression of a building conceived first as an enclosing shell.
Architecture Made by Folding Steel
The exterior is not simply metal cladding attached to a conventional frame. The ribbed steel plates themselves participate in forming the building’s shell.

Large diagonal folds create triangular surfaces that extend from wall to roof.

A glazed entrance appears where the steel skin is cut away, making the enormous scale of the surrounding surface especially apparent.
Entering Through a Cut in the Shell
The entrance is not positioned as a conventional opening in the center of a facade. Instead, it appears within a triangular gap carved from the folded steel volume.

The result is less like a doorway inserted into a wall than an interior revealed by cutting through a larger object. A shallow flight of steps creates a subtle transition from the street into the building.
adao Ando Without Exposed Concrete
The building challenges the familiar image of Ando as an architect of exposed concrete.

Its dark steel surfaces change subtly with weather and daylight, giving the massive facade an unexpectedly thin and almost membrane-like quality.

A single narrow window cuts through the large surface, emphasizing rather than weakening the wall around it.
The material is different, but the architectural idea remains familiar: establish the wall first, then cut carefully controlled openings into it.
Concrete Behind the Steel
Moving around the building reveals another material behind the dark shell.

Exposed concrete appears alongside the steel volume, revealing the hybrid nature of the structure.

Rather than competing with the steel, the concrete becomes a secondary element whose weight and texture make the smooth metal surfaces appear even lighter.
A Horizontal Slit Through a Closed Wall
The side elevation is marked by a single horizontal window.

It is too narrow to function as a conventional display window. Instead, it reads as a precise incision through a continuous dark wall.
The relationship recalls Ando’s frequent use of narrow openings in concrete architecture. Even though the material has changed, the idea of controlling light and vision through carefully placed cuts remains.
An Experiment in “Light Architecture”
Contemporary reports explain that the site was subject to temporary land-use conditions, leading Ando to propose an image of a lighter, more provisional form of architecture.
The structural solution followed this idea. The shell was divided into nearly one hundred steel pieces to accommodate fabrication, transportation and construction constraints before being welded together on site.
The project was developed between 2004 and 2005, immediately alongside the period in which Ando was developing 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. GA ARCHITECT places the two projects consecutively within this phase of his work.

hhstyle.com/casa may appear far removed from the exposed-concrete architecture normally associated with Tadao Ando. Yet its fundamental ideas—wall, incision, movement and controlled visibility—remain remarkably consistent.
Changing the material makes those principles even easier to see.
My Impression
My first impression of this building was simply how unlike a typical Tadao Ando building it appeared. Almost no exposed concrete is visible from the main facade; instead, a huge dark steel surface dominates the street.
Walking around it changed that impression. The massive wall, the narrow horizontal opening, the triangular entrance and the concealed concrete structure all revealed ideas that are very familiar within Ando’s architecture.
What I found particularly interesting was its relationship with Cat Street. In an area defined by shops competing for visibility, this building does almost the opposite. It hides most of its interior and makes the visitor curious about what lies behind the wall.
At the time these photographs were taken, the building was occupied by BODY WILD, and large commercial graphics had been added to the facade. Even so, the underlying architecture remained strong enough to dominate the composition.
Seeing works like this—buildings that sit slightly outside the familiar image of Ando—is one of the pleasures of visiting his architecture in person.
