It Began with a Building
It began with a building.
Not with architecture.
I wasn’t someone who had always admired buildings.
I knew nothing about architects.
In fact, I had never even heard the name Tadao Ando.
Then, one ordinary day, I walked into a building.
Everything changed.
It was the year 2000.
My job had transferred me from Tokyo to Osaka.
Near my office stood a building called GALLERIA [akka].
One afternoon, while heading out for lunch with a colleague, I stepped inside almost without thinking.
The moment I entered, something shifted.
I had never experienced a space quite like it.
I remember thinking only one thing.
“What is this place?”
It wasn’t the concrete.
It wasn’t the light.
It wasn’t the geometry.
At the time, I didn’t know enough about architecture to notice any of those things.
But I knew how I felt.
Excited.
Curious.
Drawn to the space for reasons I couldn’t explain.
More than twenty-five years later, I still remember that feeling.
Some time afterward, I learned that the building had been designed by Tadao Ando.
That was the first time his name meant anything to me.
Soon another thought quietly took shape.
I want to see more.
The first building I deliberately visited was the Chikatsu Asuka Museum in Osaka Prefecture.
Then another.
And another.
Without realizing it, my weekends became journeys in search of architecture.
I never wanted to rush.
I never wanted to follow a tour.
I preferred to walk alone.
To stay as long as I liked.
To return to the same corner again and again.
To watch how the light changed.
To discover my own view of each building.
That became one of the happiest ways I knew to spend a day.
Before I noticed,
more than twenty-five years had passed.
I visited buildings.
I photographed them.
Then I went looking for the next one.
There was never a grand ambition behind it.
No checklist.
No destination.
I simply loved the experience.
This archive is not an attempt to evaluate architecture.
Nor is it a place to demonstrate expertise.
It is simply the personal record of one admirer.
Someone who walked these spaces,
looked carefully,
paused often,
and was quietly moved by what he found.
Architecture does not require expertise.
You don’t need to understand design theory.
You don’t need technical knowledge.
Sometimes, all it takes is a single feeling.
There’s something about this place.
That is enough.
More than enough.
If this archive inspires even one person to visit a building by Tadao Ando,
to experience the silence,
the light,
the concrete,
and the emotions that cannot be captured in photographs,
then it has fulfilled its purpose.
